BikeSafe is
an initiative run by Police Forces around the United Kingdom who work
with the whole of the biking world to help to lower the number of
motorcycle rider casualties. By passing on their knowledge, skills and
experience, police motorcyclists can help you become a safer more
competent rider.
They help you to increase your ability and confidence, so you can get even more enjoyment from riding your motorcycle.
The
BikeSafe initiative is a nationwide plan of action to reduce the number
of motorcycle accident casualties by promoting safer riding.
The
BikeSafe sessions run within Devon and Cornwall Constabulary are each
one day in length, starting at about 10am and finishing around 4pm.
They consist of an interactive classroom session in the morning looking
at the main causes of potential collisions such as cornering,
positioning, overtaking etc. This is followed by a break for lunch
(which is sadly NOT provided) and then a 3-3.5hr on road ride with
constructive feedback given by the police motorcyclist. This is at a
maximum ratio of 2 BikeSafe participants to one police motorcyclist but
can sometimes be a one on one experience depending on numbers.
All
of this for a mere £25. Vouchers are also available to give as a
present to a friend or loved one to enable them to come on a BikeSafe
session and benefit from the experience. Riders with a home postcode in
Cornwall will have their BikeSafe session paid for by their local
authority.
The First Bike on Scene course has been designed to provide
motorcyclists with the knowledge
and skills required to manage the
scene of an accident.
First Bike on Scene will provide basic life support skills –
helping in those vital minutes before the arrival of an ambulance.
Taking control and applying the right techniques could not only save
lives but could prevent further injury. This one day course deals with
the types of life-threatening trauma that might be encountered with a
motorcycle accident. The course covers:
The Shiny Side Up partnership has been flourishing since 2002!
Based
in the East Midlands it consists of a group of dedicated professionals
from Road Safety, Accident Investigation and Police Traffic Management
teams. In recent years the partnership has also benefited enormously
from the support of the Highways Agency.
The name Shiny Side Up was chosen to reflect the bikers’ saying “Keep
your shiny side up” - implying that the rubber side should stay firmly
on the road!
